Even if he broke into his former house and caused his wife minor injuries in the process, he only pays £100 fine. To fix the broken window no doubt. Poor man - they had been separated for 8 weeks and he felt a sense of loss... made worse because he had been made redundant! So he decided to rape his wife... in order to hide his feelings of inadequacy, humiliate someone else, vent his frustrations? No wonder Berkshire Women's Aid were angry. They see this kind of occurrence (and far worse) every day. If women aren't safe in their own homes... well they must be 'asking for it'! The maximum penalty of £l000 and 6 months jail seems a small price to pay and who would suffer in the process? The wife and children with no support or income. The women pay in every way. But, don't worry women - 'Rape law changes could be on the way'. The proposals being considered suggest marital rape charges would have to obtain the approval of the Director of Public Prosecutions. The Government Criminal Law Revision Committee is 'worried about a possible flood of malicious cases and are anxious to protect the role of the family court in looking after wives' interests. But who is going to protect and look after the wife? (Post 22 & 23 Oct) . BEATING THE WOMEN Part II But then violence against women doesn't always happen within marriage. It happens anywhere, everywhere, every day and to every woman who reads or listens to the media. It even affects their minds - what about the young woman who was supposed to have 'made up' allegations of incest against her father because she was influenced by 'Cross Roads' and then she was threatened by her father with guilt and her sister with violence after telling the police. (Must protect the nuclear family) (Post 27 Oct) Or the young woman who charged a teenage boy with indecent assault when he grabbed her, kissed her and she fell, pulling him on top of her (Post 23 Oct) Still, if you have proof of a stab wound in the stomach, a bullet in the arm, or are just generally battered, someone may believe you (Post 21,22 Oct & 3 Nov) However, Justice Mais recently told a woman not to carry a knife in future - she might kill another man in self-defence if she does (Chronicle 23 Oct) Besides it might put off your would-be rescuers if you also appear violent (Post 3 Nov) BEATING THE WOMEN Part III The women at Reading University have taken action none too soon. Extra lighting, completed footpaths, classes finishing before dark - it all helps doesn't it? Would these have saved that student on Whiteknights Road from rape at Alfred Sutton Schools? (Post 2 Nov) No. What is needed is a revolutionary change in the way women are perceived by men. Jill Tweedie beseeched men to investigate the nature of their innermost feelings towards women when writing about the Yorkshire Ripper. But then as long as women are considered to be peripheral to the mainstream of society, they will be viewed as easy targets, expendable beings and the means for boosting male egos by being subordinated and humiliated. Of course, those pages full of models in suggestive poses draped in negligee and lingerie arc only selling clothing, aren't they? (Post 3 Nov) - - - RED RAG BUSINESS NEWS Things are looking up!
